Six months after finishing year 12, while I was completing my Certificate IV in Business, I applied for and was given the opportunity to participate in Monadelphous’ Indigenous Traineeship program. I’d always wanted to be involved in a large business with access to a range of career opportunities, and I’ve definitely been given those over the past seven years.
Since starting with Monadelphous, I’ve finished my Certificate IV in Business and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, and had the opportunity to participate in leadership skills workshops and peer support training. I’ve been promoted into a range of different roles across the business, gaining experience in different sectors and from different managers along the way, all of whom have been very supportive of me and my career objectives.
What’s exciting and motivating, is that when I joined seven years ago, Monadelphous had just launched its first Reconciliation Action Plan. I’ve had the opportunity to be involved right from the get-go, and now sit on our Reconciliation Action Plan committee helping to steer and deliver our third Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan which will drive more opportunities for other young Indigenous people.
These experiences have seen me present to students throughout Western Australia on my career progress and decisions to date, as well as given me the opportunity to attend a range of events focused on reconciliation, something I am extremely passionate about. I’m now out-and-about gaining insights and bringing them back to our business to help shape our reconciliation commitments in the future!
