In 2019 our Mount Whaleback Asset Integrity Team (AIMS) fabricated a blue tree, and since then it has made its way across multiple Pilbara sites, raising awareness for and breaking down the stigma around mental health and acting as a conversation starter.
In May this year the blue tree arrived at our Newman branch. Placed at the front of the workshop, the tree has served as a reminder of the impacts of mental health. The team saw this as an opportunity to host a fundraiser to further promote the message amongst the Newman community and raise funds to support Beyond Blue.
On Thursday July 15, Mining and Minerals North West Maintenance Services and Engineering Panel Contracts teams worked together to put on a BBQ for the town. The Newman IGA donated supplies for the event, with the leftovers going to the Newman Women’s Shelter.
A great turn out on the day saw the team raise close to $2,000 for Beyond Blue. The BBQ also provided the opportunity to share mental health resources to support the conversation, including an inspiring video of employee Tony Higgs’ who shared his personal mental health journey.
East Pilbara Operations Manager, Luke Scobie said it was great to see the Newman community come together to support such a good cause.
“Mental health is important and as leaders we play a significant role in ensuring everyone feels supported,” he said.
Thanks to everyone who supported and volunteered their time! The team are looking forward to taking part in many more mental health initiatives throughout the year.
