“Some career highlights at Monadelphous have been working through from being a Boilermaker to where I am today, and being recognised with an Outstanding Service Award by our client.”

I became interested in Monadelphous when a close friend spoke highly of the company and the people - and since Olympic Dam was a new exciting mine in SA, I applied for a role. What I liked about it was that we were working in a new town with a young vibrant community. Everyone got involved with supporting sport and recreation and we all grew together. Monadelphous actively encouraged and sponsored sporting clubs and supported our teams.

A career highlight at Monadelphous has been working through from being a Boilermaker to where I am today, and being recognised with an Outstanding Service Award by our client. I’ve enjoyed working with a variety of people to achieve the success we have had as a branch. It’s also been really satisfying working on some of the bigger site projects, where the end result has been win/win for the team and the client. Having the opportunity to see Monadelphous grow with Roxby - then having kids, and seeing them grow and become part of Monadelphous (and the community) has been a massive inspiration.

Monadelphous has fully supported me in my community activities (and there have been several!) and provided sponsorship and financial support to the organisations along the way.

Both my wife and I are from indigenous backgrounds and encourage the community to support indigenous people. Advice I received as a young apprentice, (which I’ve passed onto my own kids and many younger people) is ‘If you weren’t born rich, you need to work a third of your life so you may as well enjoy it. Don’t feel like the world owes you, get out and earn it and treat others as you would like to be treated’. Monos as a company, and our branch in particular, has a long history of indigenous employment, over the journey I’ve been directly involved in recruiting many indigenous tradies and really encourage them to better themselves in an environment where if you have the skills and drive you will definitely get the opportunities.

As well as supporting all of our sports teams and associations over the years, Monadelphous has provided the following support directly to the community:

  • Supporting the Roxby Downs Christmas Pageant (Floats in a number of pageants over the years).
  • Lending cranes free of charge to many different clubs and organisations to relocate containers and equipment.
  • Via Andamooka Progress Association, cranes to assist in relocating containers, the fabrication of handrails for the Town Hall and fabrication of handrails for the seniors’ bathrooms.
  • Ongoing support to Arid Recovery, a non-profit environmental organisation with the fabrication and installation of a viewing platform in the reserve, fabrication of various cat traps, steel frames for enclosures, supply of profile cut plates for the entrance to the reserve and many other jobs over the years.
  • Assisting students from the Roxby Downs Area School with work experience in the Fabrication and Mechanical workshops. Many students have been through the workshops over the years, and a few have gone on to become apprentices with us.

I’m proud to be part of an organisation that has also supported these sporting associations and clubs in Roxby:

  • The Roxby Downs Basketball Association: Fabrication of mobile cages to store basketballs in, sponsorship of teams my wife, Michelle and I played for, sponsors of Junior basketball and being flexible with my time when I began coaching junior basketball.
  • Roxby Downs Cricket Association: Monadelphous fabricated site screens for the oval and provided storage boxes for teams to store equipment in. RDCA supported the McGrath Foundation very strongly over a 5 year period, raising almost $100,000 for Breast Cancer nurses, with my team arranging a community event each year to support the foundation and raise money. Monos were awesome supporting this event with supplying auction items, equipment, vehicles, trucks, labour (including a lot of my time setting up the event). They also funded one of our employees to safely operate an EWP, so photographers could take photos of the event from high up over the oval. Monos also sponsored my team for a number of years.
  • Roxby Downs Football Association: Monadelphous installed new stairs and platform on the scoreboard, sponsors local teams and supported me in my time as a junior assistant coach and coach. They also provided cranes to relocate containers and stand up goal posts.
  • Roxby Downs softball: Monadelphous sponsored our Monos team for 3 years.
  • Roxby Downs Lawn bowls: Monadelphous sponsored our Monos team for 2 years.
  • Roxby Downs Golf Club: Monadelphous has been a sponsor for 30 years, and our previous Branch Manager, Dave, was the President of the Golf Club for a number of years. Over the years Monos have provided additional support to the club via the servicing of equipment, repair of mowers and supply of steel pegs for fairway markers, tee block markers and fairway markers, equipment and consumables for busy bees, cranes for relocating containers and heavier equipment. They also assisted by repairing park benches around tee blocks, installing doors in containers and supporting fund raising days (which they continue to do). The highlight of all of this support was that Mono’s sponsored the whole day for the golf club’s 30th Anniversary.
